Is there anyway to get an apple script to run and add itself in the top menu bar of osx (for example, next to clock)

What do you mean with “add it self”?
Is it that you want an icon to click on it, and then run the script?
Or is it an icon to display a progress in your script?
In the first case I refer to the application Butler (http://www.petermaurer.de/butler/)
If you want something like the second option, I suggest you start using AppleScript Studio, and Cocoa.
