Hi,

What are the possibilities with automating a program with AppleScript?
Can you use AppleScript for all running programs on a Mac?

It helps if the application is scriptable (accepts applescript commands). Drop the app’s icon onto Script Editor’s icon.
Otherwise, you can use UI Scripting (in OS X) or lots of input commands in Mac OS (simulate keystrokes, mouse clicks and so on).

So, if an application doesn’t accept AppleScript it is possible to make it accept AppleScript?

If you can control it using keystrokes and mouse-clicks, yes, most of times.
